A QUESTION I GET ASKED

“Will this work for my business too?”

My social-media results aren't useful if the method only works for me. So here's how I think about it.

Think of social media as a very large shop window.

The useful part isn't simply having millions of people potentially walking past. It's being able to create content around a particular subject and allow the platforms to find people who are interested in that subject.

That's what I've done with my own audience. I've built content around the concerns and interests of people broadly in my age group — money, work, time, later life and having more choices.

The same underlying principles can be adapted to many different markets. The subject, audience and content will change, but the process of attracting relevant attention remains useful.

I particularly like applying it to digital businesses because they aren't restricted to customers who happen to live within a few miles of you.

The suitability and effectiveness of any marketing method varies by business, audience, platform, location and execution. Previous reach does not guarantee future results.
